1 1/2 cups pitted dates
1 1/2 cups orange juice
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups packed light brown sugar
3 sticks (1 1/2 cups) unsalted butter, in pieces
1 cup flaked coconut
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 1/2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats

In a saucepan simmer the dates in orange juice, stirring, 30 minutes, or until mixture is thickened. In a bowl combine flour, salt, brown sugar and blend butter until mixture is crumbly. Stir in the coconut, walnuts and oats. Press half the dough mixture into the bottom of a 13-by-9-inch baking pan and pat it flat with a sheet of wax paper. Spread date mixture over dough to within 1/2 inch of edges, top with remaining dough mixture and flatten mixture lightly. Bake 45 minutes at 350 degrees F., or until golden. Let mixture cool in the pan on a wire rack and cut it into squares.
